Al-Ḥusayn ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib was a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, and son of Ali ibn Abi Talib, the fourth Rashid caliph of Islam, and Muhammad's daughter, Fatimah. After the death of his older brother, Hasan, Husayn ibn Ali became the Imam of Muslims. In Kufah His supporters gave their allegiance to him. However, he told them he was still bound to the peace treaty between Hasan and Muawiyah I and they should wait until Muawiyah's death. Later, Husain did not accept the request of Muawiyah for the succession of his son, Yazid, and considered this action a breach of the Hasan Muawiya treaty.
Yazid ibn Muawiya, commonly known as Yazid, was the second caliph of the Umayyad caliphate, he was the caliph as appointed by his father Muawiyah and ruled for three years. Hussein-ibn-Ali, the grandson of Muhammad, along with many other prominent Muslims, not only disapproved of Yazid's nomination for caliph but also declared it against the spirit of Islam. While the nomination issue was deliberated upon in Medina, Abdullah ibn Zubayr went with Husayn to Mecca because some prominent Muslims thought that Mecca would be the best base for launching a campaign to build up public opinion against Yazid's nomination. However, before any significant work could be done, Muawiyah died, and Yazid took over the reins of government.
Al-Ḥusayn ibn Ali came at a place near it known as Karbala, his caravan was intercepted by Yazid's army. He was martyred and beheaded in the Battle of Karbala’ on 10th of Muḥarram by Shimr Ibn Thil-Jawshan, along with most of his family and companions, including Husayn's six-month-old son, Ali al-Asghar, with the women and children were taken as prisoners. Anger at Husayn's death was turned into a rallying cry that helped undermine the Umayyad caliphate's legitimacy, and ultimately overthrow it by the Abbasid Revolution.
Husayn is highly regarded by Muslims for refusing to pledge allegiance to Yazid, the Umayyad caliph because he considered the rule of the Umayyads unjust. The annual memorial for him and his children, family and his companions is the first month in the Islamic calendar, that is Muharram, and the day he was martyred is the Ashura, tenth day of Muharram, a day of mourning for Muslims.
